It is typically prescribed for relief of constipation and for the management of neurogenic bowel dysfunction as well as part of bowel preparation before medical examinations, such as for a colonoscopy.Bisacodyl is a derivative of triphenylmethane.

It works by increasing activity of the intestines to cause a bowel movemen.Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative. It stimulates the muscles in the wall of the small intestine and colon to generate a bowel movement. It also alters water and electrolyte levels inintestines, increasing the level of fluids which also produce a laxative-like effect.It may also increase the synthesis of prostaglandins and cyclic-AMP, and this may contribute to increased secretion of water and electrolytes. Bisacodyl is rapidly converted by intestinal and bacterial enzymes to its desacetyl metabolite.As much as 5% of an oral dose is absorbed and excreted in the urine as the glucuronide.
