Quinine hydrochloride dihydrate is a natural white crystalline alkaloid having antipyretic (fever-reducing), antimalarial analgesic(painkilling), anti-inflammatory properties and a bitter taste. It is a stereoisomer of quinidine which, unlike quinine, is an anti-arrhythmic. Quinine contains two major fused-ring systems: the aromatic the bicyclic quinuclidine.

1) Q HCL is a very active ingredient in extracts of the cinchona that have been used for that purpose since 1633.
2) Q HCL is a mild antipyretic and analgesic and which has been used in common cold preparations for that purpose.
3) Q HCL is also useful in some muscular disorders, especially nocturnal leg cramps and myotonia congenita, because of its direct effects on muscle membrane and sodium channels.
The mechanisms of its antimalarial effects are not well understood.
