Paroxetine is a new highly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, mechanistically similar to fluoxetine, fluvoxamine and sertraline, introduced for all types of depressive illnesses including depression associated with anxiety. It is reportedly non-sedating and non-stimulatory and compared to fluoxetine has a shorter duration of action (half-life of 24 hours versus 2 to 3 days). Paroxetine is also being investigated as a product for obesity, alcoholism and obsessive-compulsive disorders.
As for its fixed-dose combinations, paroxetine hydrochloride is often combined with other medications to enhance its therapeutic effects or to address other symptoms. These include:
Olanzapine + Paroxetine: This combination is used for depression associated with bipolar disorder and resistant depression.
Bupropion + Paroxetine: This combination is used for major depressive disorder that has not responded to other use.
