Natural astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment produced by the Haematococcus pluvialis algae, only when its survival is in danger. If water levels decline, salinity increases or if there is too much direct sunlight, then the H. pluvialis algae synthesizes astaxanthin to protect itself. When this happens, astaxanthin rapidly accumulates in its cells. This turns the normally green microalgae a deep color of red.
