Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) is a bile acid that occurs naturally in the human body. It is synthesized from cholesterol in the liver and secreted into bile to aid in the digestion and absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins in the small intestine. UDCA is also known as ursodiol or ursodeoxycholate.

The therapeutic properties of UDCA were discovered in the 1960s and have since been used to remedy various hepatobiliary disorders.
