Sulbactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that is often used in combination with other antibiotics to enhance its bactericidal effect.
Sulbactam can enhance the bactericidal effectiveness of other antibiotics by inhibiting the activity of beta-lactamase, which is an enzyme that many bacteria use to degrade beta-lactamides. Inhibition of β-lactamase activity can prevent the degradation of antibiotics, thus improving their bactericidal effect.
Sulbactam is mainly used to Gram-negative bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, respiratory infections and skin and soft tissue infections.
Combined with antibiotics such as penicillin or cephalosporins can improve effectiveness and reduce the occurrence of bacterial resistance.
